Therapeutic dietsare usually ordered for individuals directly under a physician's
care, such as a patient in a hospital or someone recovering from surgery
or illness. When special diets are ordered by a physician, a Registered
Dietitian can help answer concerns and questions regarding ingredients,
amounts and preparation.
Preventive nutrition is aimed at individuals who are in good health - and
want to stay healthy.
Some areas of expertise include:
- Allergies and food intolerances
- Bariatric surgery
- Childhood and adolescent nutrition
- Gastrointestinal disorders
- Nutrition support
- Heart disease (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high triglycerides)
- Pregnancy and lactation
- Specialty nutrition for cancer, kidney disease and liver disease
- Sports nutrition
- Weight management
- End of Life Care
Generally, initial consultations are scheduled for one hour, with follow-up
sessions scheduled as needed. A fee is charged for nutritional counseling.
To determine insurance coverage each individual should check with his/her
insurance company. Fees vary depending on the length of services provided.
A referral order from the physician is recommended, but not mandatory.
