Medical Oncology and Infusion Services

Comprehensive cancer care requires a team approach, treating not only the disease but the needs of the patient and their family.

  • Medical Oncology uses chemotherapy, biotherapy and targeted therapies to treat a variety of cancers through infusion, injection or oral medications. Some 40 percent of medical oncology's registered nurses hold national certification in Medical Oncology.
  • Infusion Center provides intravenous infusions for antimicrobial therapy, therapeutic injections, and many other infusion therapies that include (but are not limited to: IV antibiotics, fluid and electrolyte management (hydration), Remicade infusions, subcutaneous therapies (Neupogen etc.), blood transfusions, autoimmune disorder therapies, and anemia therapies. Your family physician and/or specialist may refer you to our Infusion Center for such treatments.

Campbell County Health's Medical Oncology area offers comfortable, spacious surroundings on the main floor of the hospital. Use the north, or "annex" entrance to access the Heptner Cancer Center.

Members of the cancer care and infusion team:

  • Medical Oncologist: Dr. Pauline Lerma is a Board Certified Medical Oncologist, specializing in using chemotherapy, biotherapy and targeted therapies to treat cancer.
  • Nurse Practitioner: Stacey Hastreiter is an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN) who graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2010 with her Master's Degree in Nursing. Prior to receiving her Master's degree she worked as a Registered Nurse in the oncology field for 4 years. Oncology is her passion which is demonstrated in her work. She is from Humphrey, Nebraska. She loves spending time with her husband, two daughters and family and friends.
  • Other Physicians: Family Practice, Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, Orthopedics or Pediatricians may be involved in a diagnosis of cancer. Board Certified Radiologists and Surgeons perform procedures to identify and remove cancerous tissue.
  • Diagnostic Imaging: X-ray, CT scanning, MRI, Ultrasound and Mammography are important diagnostic tools used in identification and treatment.
  • Laboratory tests and Pathology: The hospital laboratory performs tests for cancer markers and health assessments during the treatment process, and provide blood products for transfusion when necessary. Pathologists confirm a cancer diagnosis and staging to track disease progression.
  • Certified cancer nurses: The nurses coordinate patient care within Cancer Care Services, and facilitate communication with your treatment team.
  • Social Worker: The social worker helps find needed resources for assistance in the home, provides emotional support, referrals to programs such as hospice, if needed, and advice on items such as financial assistance and living wills.
  • Chaplain: The chaplain provides spiritual support for you and your loved ones.
  • Dietitian: Good nutrition is essential to the healing process. A dietitian may be involved in care to ensure a well-balanced diet.
  • Specialized Therapists: If surgery or treatment change the way you function in your daily activities, you may be referred to a physical therapist, occupational therapist, or speech language pathologist for assistance. Physical and occupational therapists provide mastectomy rehabilitation, strengthening and massage therapy.
