Chronic Health

This no-cost, six-week program will cover techniques to deal with problems like:

  • frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation
  • learn appropriate exercise for improving and maintaining strength, flexibility and endurance
  • discuss the appropriate use of medications
  • get tips on communicating effectively with family, friends and health professionals
  • dealing with the emotions of your disease
  • and practice decision making for better care, how to evaluate treatments and best foods for a health you.

Examples of long-term or chronic health conditions include, but are not limited to:

  1. heart and blood conditions: high blood pressure, heart disease
  2. respiratory conditions: COPD, emphysema and asthma
  3. GI system conditions: Crohn's, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  4. neurological disorders: multiple sclerosis (MS), stroke, Parkinson's, Huntington's and Dementia
  5. mental health conditions: PTSD, anxiety, depression
  6. autoimmune disorders: fibromyalgia, arthritis

Chronic Pain

Most everyone has experienced pain from rolling an ankle or smashing a finger in the door and it eventually subsides and doesn’t derail activity for too long. For most, pain is a side effect of living and usually a temporary or an acute condition. Chronic pain however, is a long-term pain, lasting for months and years and persists. Those who suffer from chronic pain, however, experience long and short periods of pain that may or may not have an origin but it usually does impact everyday activities and quality of life on a regular basis.

Healthy U Chronic Pain is a free, six-week workshop designed and facilitated by healthcare experts provides hands-on tools and methods to help sufferers and their friends, family and caregivers take an active, progressive role in managing their chronic pain. Each week participants have the opportunity to share with others who are experiencing chronic pain as well as learn about distractions, how to identify the triggers, manage the emotions, develop an action plan and improve communication that surrounds chronic pain.

Let’s take a moment to think about a lemon. Imagine it’s color, now think about how it feels, and smells, and how it tastes? Is your mouth watering? Even just a little bit? This is an example of the mind/body connection – what your mind is recalling – positive or negative is what your body physically responds to.

This workshop touches on numerous topics such as:

  • The mind/body connection and guided imagery
  • Breathing and relaxation body scan
  • Pacing and planning – change activity rather than stop altogether
  • Communication with your loved one and your healthcare professional
  • The emotional toll

Chronic pain is pain that lasts more than six (6) months, is ongoing or lasting beyond the expected time for healing.
