CCH May 2018 Volunteer Spotlight: Sallie Davis

Meet Sallie Davis, a valuable volunteer with Campbell County Health in Gillette, Wyoming.

Sallie has spent her whole life volunteering, beginning with Campbell County Health (CCH) in 1975 when her grandmother was a resident at Pioneer Manor. Today she can be found playing the piano for residents with Alzheimer’s on Wednesday afternoons at The Legacy Living and Rehabilitation Center.

“Sallie always knows what kind of music to play for our residents--whether it is something calming and relaxing or something to get them up moving and shaking,” says Marla Russell, Activity Coordinator at The Legacy.

Sallie encourages the residents to sing along with her while she plays. Crowd favorites include Old Susanna and You Are My Sunshine.

Sallie started taking piano lessons when she was five years old, and played for the public just a few months after her first lesson. She continued to play throughout her childhood, and then played for her children while they were growing up. Playing the piano is a true passion for Sallie, and also a guilty pleasure. “It’s like skipping school!” says Sallie, “If I am supposed be cleaning the house, I’ll just play the piano.”

In addition to playing the piano, Sallie worked in the mailroom at Pioneer Manor and she also served on the Advisory Board. Besides volunteering for CCH, Sallie has served on the Campbell County United Way Board and the Campbell County Public Library Board of Trustees. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels for 25 years and donated her time with the Council of Community Services. “She is a wonderful volunteer with a beautiful smile,” says Marla.

Outside of volunteering, Sallie enjoys knitting, crocheting and reading. Her family keeps her busy too—she has nine grandchildren and 11 (soon to be 12) great-grandchildren!

Sallie embodies the spirit of volunteerism—giving her time for the opportunity to help others. Thank you, Sallie, for sharing your time and your smile with our residents at The Legacy Living and Rehabilitation Center.
