Avoiding slipping and falling this winter

The first snowfall has arrived, which can be a hazard for many. Whether you are an avid snowboarder or just outside trying to shovel snow, proper precaution is needed. Here’s how to make sure your winter is injury-free:

Purchase Proper Shoes

If you are headed outdoors to shovel your driveway or sidewalk, be sure your shoes have a thick, slip-proof sole. If you are running or participating in winter sports, be sure that your footwear can handle the job. You want thick, waterproof shoes that will allow you to perform the task at hand properly. Shoes that are too large or too small can also lead to falls or put extra pressure and pain on your feet, so be sure they are the right fit.

Look Out for Black Ice

When temperatures drop, black ice can form. Be sure to walk carefully and slowly outdoors, and stick to clear and salted paths when possible. The same goes for inside — water and melted snow can make for a slippery situation, so be careful when first entering a building.

Be Careful When Shoveling

When clearing snow from your property, you’ll want to make sure you do so with proper form. Bend with your knees, not your back, and don’t overload your shovel. If you can, ask for help.

Slow it Down

When walking about the town, try to avoid steps and curbs when possible, and walk flat-footed and slowly. If you suspect ice is present, tap it with your foot before continuing. When participating in winter activities, don’t forget to stay hydrated and watch your surroundings.
