Every November, while families prepare for their Thanksgiving dinners and Black Friday shopping, communities across the country team up to bring awareness to life with diabetes.

While nearly 30 million people in the United States have some form of diabetes, 1-in-4 don’t even realize that they’re walking around with the disease.

This year the focus is gestational diabetes.

Gestational diabetes occurs in women who develop diabetes during pregnancy. Once a woman is diagnosed with this form of diabetes, she risks developing diabetes later in her lifetime. They may also have a lifelong risk of diabetes if they give birth to a baby weighing over nine pounds.

To get involved with Diabetes Awareness month, talk to your local provider about your risk factors, commit to a healthier lifestyle and most importantly, know that you are not in it alone.
