Walk In Clinic vs Primary Care: How to Distinguish the Two

Source: staff. (2018, April 13). Family Doctor vs. Quick-care Clinic. Familydoctor.org. https://familydoctor.org/family-doctor-vs-quick-care-clinic/

A family physician is one of the most important healthcare relationships. However, there are still advantages to using a walk-in clinic. Walk ins, or quick-care clinics often offer same day appointments for care. They are available for those who may not be able to see their doctor, are traveling, or for non-emergency cases when your provider may be unavailable.

The most significant difference between a walk-in facility and your primary care provider is that your provider has your health history on file. It’s likely that they have seen you several times over many years and a trust has been built between you. Even if you don’t have a family doctor, or you’ve only seen yours a few times, there is still an opportunity to develop a relationship over time. Another advantage your doctor has over a quick-care clinic is access to more equipment and lab services.

Walk in clinics will usually see patients with common, minor health concerns. CCH Walk in provides care for the following:

Falls, strains and simple fractures
  • Mild asthma attacks and breathing difficulty

  • Wounds with moderate bleeding

  • Fever, flu, upper respiratory tract infection

  • X-rays and lab tests

  • Vomiting or diarrhea

  • Skin rashes and infections

  • Mild eye irritation

  • Urinary tract infection

  • Abdominal pain

  • Headache

  • STD testing

  • Pneumonia

  • Back pain

  • Allergies

  • Dental infection

  • Mild burns

Walk-ins and quick-care clinics should not take the place of a primary physician, emergency care or any specialist you may be seeing. Please visit our Find a Provider section for physician information.
