National Physical Therapy Month

National Physical Therapy Month

October is National Physical Therapy Month! This is a time to recognize the importance of physical therapy, what it is used for and acknowledge our own community of providers within the department.

Many patients may think they know how to move their bodies properly—until they start physical therapy. Physical therapists are trained to identify deficiencies in the biomechanics of the body and can target specific areas of weakness or improper alignment. It is an opportunity to learn about your own body and to identify movement patterns that are associated with your injury.

A physical therapist is essentially an expert in movement. These movements assist in improving quality of life, prescribed exercise, patient education and hands-on care. Physical therapy usually comes into play after an injury or disability has been diagnosed. These can range from seemingly small injuries such as whiplash to major, life altering diseases such as someone who is quadriplegic. They help patients of all ages who have been affected by disease, injury or age.

Physical therapy can:

  • Reduce pain

  • Improve or restore function and mobility

  • Reduce the need for long-term prescription medication use and surgery

  • Prevent reinjury

  • Maximize physical ability

  • Extend independent living
