Campbell County Health Receives ISO 9001:2008 Certification

GILLETTE, WY – Campbell County Health (CCH) has received ISO 9001:2008 certification from DNV Healthcare, Inc., its accrediting organization.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1947. Its purpose was to provide standardization of technical specifications for products traded in the international marketplace.

ISO 9001 is a fundamental quality management system standard that requires an organization to identify, define, document, implement (follow), monitor/measure, and continually improve the effectiveness of its processes. It is a self-directed system that requires the organization to identify and address all imposed requirements; as well as improve its organizational performance by modifying systemic issues. The concept was first brought to the United States by the automobile industry in the late 1980s because of a need to qualify the thousands of suppliers used by automobile manufacturers and was modified to include industries such as healthcare in 2008.

The basic idea of ISO 9001 is to find the things in a business that work best and turn them into standard operating procedures. They key to ISO 9001 is that it is perpetual, making each work activity as efficient as it can be, but also continually searching out improvements.

"ISO 9001 certification is considered the gold standard in quality improvement systems," said Sue Ullrich, Director of Quality and Risk Management. "It has a strong emphasis on the customer as well as systems thinking and continual improvement. It is one of the tools we use to improve the experiences of our patients and residents, helping us to reach our goal of Excellence Every Day."

CCH is one of only 135 healthcare organizations currently holding ISO 9001 certification and is surveyed every year to maintain ISO 9001 certification and healthcare accreditation from DNV.
