The cold winter months can lead to an increase in joint pain for some.
However, we know many don’t want to spend their winter locked inside.
When the temperature does drop, working out indoors is best, but you can
still enjoy your favorite winter activities when pain days are low. So
to have an active winter, without the extra pain or injury, follow these
four tips below:
The cold air does not mean you should rush your workout. Stiff muscles
are more prone to injury, so be sure to complete a proper warm-up before
performing any workout or physical activity.
2. Wear Proper Gear
If you are new to a winter sport, you’ll want to make sure you have
the proper gear. Layering up will allow you to keep warm without overheating
(since your body temperature will change). Shoes should support your ankles
and feet, and be appropriate for the task at hand. Poor shoes can lead
to a fall, or
twisted ankle, possibly leading to a few joint injuries in the end.
3. Practice Proper Form
Though trying a new winter sport can be exciting, form should still be
kept in mind. For individual winter sports, like snowboarding or skiing,
an instructor can teach the proper way to fall, so that an injury doesn’t occur.
4. Be Prepared
Be sure that all equipment is in top shape and working as it should. Pay
attention to the weather to avoid getting stuck in a storm or temperature
drop, and don’t forget to listen to your body. If you are already
aching or in pain, skip a day and recover.
