James J Naramore, MD

James J. Naramore, M.D., has spent more than 46 years caring for patients in Gillette and across Northeast Wyoming. Born and raised in Gillette, Dr. Naramore has built his career around family medicine, community service and developing lasting relationships with generations of patients.

Dr. Naramore earned his bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, from John Brown University before completing graduate studies at the University of Arkansas. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Utah, where he received Family Practice Honors, and completed his family practice residency through the University of Nebraska Affiliated Hospitals.

He has practiced in Gillette since 1978 and founded Family Health in 1981, where he has practiced for more than four decades. Throughout his career, he has served patients in a variety of settings, including emergency medicine, long-term care and correctional health. Most recently, he served as Medical Director for the Campbell County Detention Center for nearly four decades, from 1988 through 2025.

Dr. Naramore has also held numerous leadership and teaching roles throughout his career. He has served as Chief of Staff and Chief of the Department of Family Practice at Campbell County Memorial Hospital and has been an adjunct clinical faculty member in family practice at the University of Wyoming since 1986. He has also participated in medical education and preceptorship programs for students and physician assistants from institutions including Creighton University and the University of Washington.

As a family medicine physician, Dr. Naramore enjoys the variety that comes with caring for patients across different stages of life. He particularly values getting to know his patients and their families. “I think if you don’t want to get burned out, you ought to mix it up,” Dr. Naramore said. “You ought to not do the same thing over and over again. That’s what’s wonderful about family practice.”

Dr. Naramore also has a longstanding interest in aviation. He earned his private pilot’s license in 1969 and has served as an FAA Medical Examiner since 1986. He is also a certified DOT examiner and enjoys performing flight physicals and working with pilots.

His contributions to healthcare and the community have been recognized throughout his career. In 2019, he received the Campbell County Healthcare Foundation Outstanding Healthcare Award, followed by tributes in the Congressional Record from U.S. Senators John Barrasso and Mike Enzi in 2020. He was also named the Wyoming Medical Society Physician of the Year in 2020.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Naramore enjoys reading, traveling, restoring and showing his vintage Ford pickups, and spending time with his wife of 54 years, Karen, their four children and grandchildren. He owns two 1956 Ford pickups and occasionally takes them to car shows.

Despite traveling and having family across the country, Wyoming remains home. “I like the people and I like the Western spirit,” Dr. Naramore said. “Gillette’s really been good to a lot of people.”

After more than four decades of caring for the community, Dr. Naramore looks forward to continuing his work in family medicine at Campbell County Health and providing the kind of personal, relationship-based care that has defined his career.
