A Legacy of Joy: Kyla’s Heartfelt Tribute to Her Grandmother

At Campbell County Health, we believe in the power of compassion and connection, especially during life’s most difficult moments. That’s why we are proud to share the story of Kyla, a dedicated ICU Unit Secretary and CNA, who has created something truly special for families coping with loss: A Legacy of Joy.

Kyla's inspiration for this program comes from the love and loss of her beloved grandmother, Joy. In March of 2023, Kyla lost her grandma, a woman whose heart for others left a lasting impact on everyone she encountered. "You never know what’s going on in another person’s life, so why not make a difference in it?” This is a saying that Kyla’s grandmother always lived by, and it’s a philosophy Kyla holds close as she continues her work in healthcare.

When Kyla said goodbye to her grandmother, she received a simple yet profound gift at the funeral: a small, textured heart. The heart, which she keeps close to this day, at the time symbolized her grief and became a reminder of the love and joy her grandmother had spread throughout her life. It was at that moment Kyla realized she wanted to honor her grandmother’s legacy by sharing this same comfort with others.

Thus, A Legacy of Joy was born. This program offers families a meaningful symbol of remembrance during their most trying times. Each heart is given to families facing the loss of a loved one in the ICU or other care settings at Campbell County Health. The hearts serve as a tangible memento of love, compassion, and connection, something for families to hold on to as they navigate their grief.

For Kyla, this initiative is more than just a gesture; it’s her way of continuing her grandmother’s legacy and making a difference in the lives of others. “These hearts represent compassion, remembrance, and the idea that we’re never truly alone,” Kyla shares, “I hope that when someone receives a heart, they feel a little more at peace knowing that someone cared, someone understood, and someone wanted to help carry them through that difficult moment.”
